Clinical Observation Appendectomy During Pregnancy

Abstract
1) Of the 36 patients, undergoing an operation for suspected appendicitis during pregnancy, 28
patients(78 per cent) had been diagnosed correctly.
2) By the classification of the trimester, during the first trimester 10 patients and the 2nd trim
ester 12 patients, had been observed.
3) Symptoms and findings in the 8 instances of mistaken diagnosis were similar to those in-pati
ents with appendicitis; in 7 of the 8 patients, the cause for the illness was not determined.
4) With the exception of the third trimester, the clinical and laboratory findings of acute app
endicitis during pregnancy are essentially the same as those in the non-pregnant patient.
5) During the last months of pregnancy, pain in the are of the right costovertebral angle and
tenderness in the right side of the flank area common manifestation of appendicitis.
6) Peritonitis caused by perforation of the appendicitis is a serious threat to pregnancy and can
result in abortion or premature labor.
7) Surgical mortality had not been observed.
